And where might one get steel braided hoses for an '85 Yamaha? For that matter, what's a good source for any parts for older bikes (especially an '85 Yamaha FJ600)?

You can find them just about anywhere, you just need to know the size of your banjo bolts and the length you require.

to see if its ur master cyllinder up top, put your thumb on the banjohole and pump the lever. When you pump nd then let out the lever, you should feel some suction on your thumb and a "pop" when you pull it off. If there's no pop, your problem is up top. If there is a pop, start working your way down.

Well, today was a very succesful day in the garage. We discovered that the hose from the master cylinder to the union was the main culprit. It was completely clogged. Some of the bolts on the banjo fittings were gummed up and the bleeders were as well.
We cleaned everything up and went to Teck Cycles to inquire about some braided steel hoses. Instead of selling us $140 worth of hoses, Frank directed us to a supply house just down the street from our house and they were able to make us the one short piece for only $7.48!

The brake fluid was NASTY! We got some trash and stuff out of the front lines and bled them until we got fresh fluid.
The rear fluid looked like someones spit cup and smelled HORRIBLE. We bled it and flushed it out as well.
Here are a couple of pics. The first one shows how nasty the rear master cylinder was before we bled it (we actually took a syringe and sucked out the old fluid from both master cylinders and started fresh before bleeding them). The second one shows the collected fluid...Yuck!

Storysun, it wasn't steel braided...just a rubber replacement. See the pic above.
