CHARLOTTE -- Inclement weather didn’t scare motorcyclists away from a charity ride this weekend.

The 12th annual Gift and Gobble motorcycle ride raises money for needy children. Participants give toys and food to ride from Central Piedmont Community College's West Campus to the Harley-Davidson dealership in Matthews.

This event is one among thousands of charity rides across the country every year. Motorcyclists say events like these are now embedded into their lives.

Gift and Gobble is one among thousands of charity rides across the country every year.
“A lot of people misinterpret motorcyclists, but motorcyclists are the most caring and giving people that I know,” said rider Terry Chartier. “They will participate in anything in any weather just to help people.”

Last year, clubs sanctioned by the American Motorcyclist Association raised $6 million for nonprofit groups.

“You have thousands of people that love to get together, to go riding on their bikes, and at the same time we can raise money for the needy, whether its children, whether its cancer,” motorcyclist Neil Gelbert said. “Recently, we did the Hendrick ride. No better way than enjoying the ride and also raising money for everybody.”

The Gift and Gobble ride is sponsored by police officers in Charlotte-Mecklenburg's Freedom Division.
