bikes on ice just plain sucks.

unless you're setup w/ spikes like this...
I don't know why riding seasons really matter to you anyway - you mostly only ride on the weekend, yeah?

Probably because riding in the winter on the weekend would be pretty shitty.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

You guys crack me up!

Oh yea, my 2.8l v6(6 speed) gets 34mpg with mixed driving, city and highway. Mostly highway. My old 3.1l v6 got about 28mpg with the same routes. And my current 500cc gets 61mpg.

MPG shouldn't be a factor for a bike vs car unless you commute 50-100 miles one way everyday.

The advantages of having a bike over a car is the fun factor and insurance cost.

yeah. although i do get way better mpg on my bike.

my car, 18-20mpg

my bike, 35-40mpg

and yeah, im paying more insurance for my '94 car w/ only liability than my '06 bike w/ full cov.

fun factor has no comparison. unless i have a supersport car, i could never come close to enjoying a car comapred to my bike.

Burning less fuel is burning less fuel, no matter how far you travel.

With that said, yea I actually do have a near 50 mile one way commute.

Well lets take Verm's numbers because they're the closest.

He gets 40 miles per gallon on the bike, and 20 in the car.

Lets say he lives twenty miles from work. And he has to drive to work 5 days a week. Sot that's 40 miles a day 5 days a week. Then lets say he works full time... so... like 47 weeks a year after stats, holiday, and sick days.

That's 9400 miles in one year, just too and from work. So, according to http://www.californiagasprices.com/ gas is $2.15 a gallon.

So, he'd be paying: $1010.5 just to drive his car to work for a year not counting insurance (which is more on the car) and upkeep.

On the bike, which gets twice the mileage, he'd be paying $505.25 to get to and from work for a year. And having more fun while he's doing it.

So with an extra $500 what could I buy? A couple of helmets, maybe a new jacket. New exhaust for the bike, a couple sets of tires (which also costs less on a bike because you only have 2), that's 1/2 a new Ohlin's rear shock, or 3/4 of a set of front springs. Not to mention insurance savings etc etc.

And that's for a SHORT theoretical commute of only 20 miles. The further he goes the more he saves (technically).

Sorry for using you as the example Verm, but you had easy numbers, and they're the closest ones to this post.
