Hot Brakes.

I noticed today that after stopping, my front disk brake was hot. When i parked my bike in front of my house I heard that "dissipating heat" ticking that would normally be associated with a hot engine, only it was my front disk. This was just from everyday ride through town. I never noticed if car rotors got hot so I have to ask if its normal for a bike rotor to heat up after some use? It was too hot to feel with your hand, but not glowing red or smoking. Nor did it give the aroma of toasted brakes. Within 100 yards of my driveway there is a stop from 50mph and another from 30 is that enough to cause alot of heat?

It will generate heat normally. Lift the front end and spin the wheel to see if your pads are dragging.

The byproduct of friction is heat so it should get hot. You should see the video of the race cars with ceramic brakes. They get so hot they actually glow red at night.

I would expect those two stops to heat up the disc pretty well. That's a whole lot of energy you're dissapating over a small area of disc.

If you're worried that the brake might be dragging, go out on the highway and run for awhile to cool the disc. Then, coast (or use the rear brake) to a stop on the shoulder. If your disc is hot, you're brake is probably dragging.

dont forget to test the brakes with your tongue!

I'd just lift the front wheel off the ground and spin it. If it's tough to turn, or you feel a grab, then you know that the brakes are dragging.

I don't think they should get that hot in just two stops, but that's not a for sure.

+1... well maybe if you were getting that rear wheel in the air... but i can't imagine normal stopping heating the brake to the point that you hear sounds... I've never had mine get that hot that I can recall

HEY! I recognize that frame and engine! I got one just like it, except it has wheels and a gas tank and some other stuff attached to it.
