What is a Crusier vs Standard?

#1 Unread post by flw »

I see so many bikes advertised as a crusier but none as standard. Without sitting on them, there seems no way to tell the difference as to which it really is.

So what are some current bikes between 500 and 900 cc's that are really standard bikes?

Honda: ?
Yamaha: ?
Kawaski: ?
Suzuki: ?

Thanks for any model/year/make info.

Check the "style" colum I made in the charts on this page:
http://www.californiabikenights.com/learn/

Said charts do not cover ALL bikes of those brands, but it should point you in the right direction.

Dual sports can fall into the catagory. But other than that, I think it depends on what the manufacturer calls it. Like Kawasaki, they call them sports, while their racereplica sport bikes are called super-sports. Some others call them street bikes too.

And +1 to Dragonhawk, their website just rocks!

Sadly the standard bike is very rare these days. The cruiser has taken over in the U.S. market. The honda nighthawk 250 is pretty much the only true standard bike left in america. Although you do still have dual sports and lots of "sport" standards like the Suzuki SV650, Honda 599, Triumph Bonneville, etc.

Since when?

All the major manufacturers still make standards.

Suzuki - Bandit

Kawa - ZRX

Honda - CB

Yamaha - FZ

Just to name a few...

Don't forget the SV, ninja 150/500/650
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

Exactly. You named "a few" because there are very few of them. Everyone makes standards, but how many can you pick from? Maybe 1 or 2 models? 3 at the most; While making 8 to 10 models of cruisers and sportbikes.

Personally, I love standards the most, so I've always been a little annoyed that the selection of standards from all manufacturers is a lot fewer than other styles of bikes.

Standards aren't as popular. Sport bikes are flashy and cruisers are "tough", you have the dual sports for the best of both worlds and the tourers for the old farts. Standards just lack the flare needed to compete in the current market. It's easier to make a sport bike/cruiser than a standard so why throw the money into a marketing campaign.

Of course cruisers arn't my thing for the distances i like to ride and neither are sport bikes. I'll be grabbing a Vstrom 650 at the end of the month b/c its the closest I can get to standard heaven
