We'll start with the good parts:

I received the sensor for my Nanocon project. It's... a bit smaller than I expected. Remember the Nanocon compared to a penny? Well, here's the sensor:

...yeah, soldering that was fun. :?

On to the bad things: I was stupid last week and took a corner a bit too fast in my Civic. What I thought was fairly fresh snow turned out to be a dusting over some polished ice. So, my car took a dive into a curb. Doh! First time I've had something happen like that, so I suppose I was about due.... well, here's to another 100,000+ miles without an incident like that!

I bent my rim, so I hit up a junkyard and got a new-to-me rim ($18 ).

Then, a couple days later my car was making a terrible noise when turning left or reversing. I had already checked my suspension parts when inspecting my rim off the car, they all looked perfectly straight. Also, it was coming from the side I didn't hit.

I pulled the passenger side wheel today and found this:

Phew, I thought I broke something and I really didn't want to spend more time wrenching on my car in the snow! We're supposed to get another four inches today, too, so I'm quite happy. :)

Holy cow this week isn't looking good.

Short version: got the second replacement motherboard for my GF's computer in yesterday. Hooked it up today and it killed two of my keyboards, including my favorite. And it's discontinued.

I am very, very angry at the manufacturer of the board. I hope someone takes responsibility for this junk.

It's pretty strange to get two DOA boards in a row, from different manufacturers, but all the other components of the system test fine.

The first was a Biostar, the second was an Epox. Both are now on my shitlist.

I'm pretty close to just forgetting it all, grabbing a copy of Windows XP and install that on the machine the GF is currently using. It's an older system but should be plenty zippy for what she does.

I just don't like the idea of paying Microsoft money, but that's a rant this forum couldn't handle, methinks. :)

At least one project is coming along:

Aside from that, I'm starting to make a list of items my Hornet needs for this riding season. Right off the bat are some required maintenance issues, such as:

inspect and grease steering head bearings
flush/bleed brakes

I know I'll come up with more soon, but I think I'd better get on that stuff sooner rather than later. I have some plans for the Kat but want to get the Hornet squared away before doing a heart transplant on the Suzuki. Oh boy!

Steering head has a couple of special locknuts that require a special fitting to install or remove. Basically a piece of steel pipe with four tabs sticking down to line up with slots on the nut. You can probably make one yourself with a hacksaw and a file. Otherwise you can get a sort of a hook thing that wraps around the steering head nuts.

All it takes is a little patience.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

Next month: week-long trip through Washington, Oregon, California, Arizona and maybe Utah. Hooray for time off!

More bad news. A former coworker of mine died in an accident last night. She was driving back home and drifted out of her lane into a semi truck. Her Focus crumpled under the rear tires after the semi tried to swerve away. She didn't make it, but her passenger is in the hospital in stable condition.

There seem to be a lot of people I know who go to the great twisties in the sky. I suppose it's just me getting older and knowing more people.

She was fun to work with and laughed at all my jokes. She was a fellow rider, as well.

I'm extremely sorry to hear the bad news... I send my condolences to you and everyone who's life she touched. I've been fortunate enough to never have to experience that, so I can't possibly know what you're feeling. I guess it was her time, right? Either way, good luck, if you need us we're always here for you...
