The 650R is going to be hard to find for under $5k. It's new as of 06, and only the colors changed for 07 (and a bit of the dash, doesn't have a textured look anymore). But Kawasaki WILL finance for a new bike, though the interest rates are killer (ugh, trust me on this). Get it though Kawa, re-finance some point down the line through bank.

that changes everything really. I say go ahead and get the bike. :D
I should've known
Why do you change your sugestion on the bike of owning one? due to the fact its a Parallel twin? I dont fully understand what that means.

Most people here won't come out and give you a 'yes'. It's because if you kill yourself (or come close) you might blame us.

Maybe you'll ride it carefully and live, and learn. Maybe you won't. People just don't want you to kill youself. You can do that on 1000's, 650's and 250's. The odds of living (for a beginner) are better on a 250.

So you've ridden bikes. Are you a beginner? How the hell should I know? Do you have balance? A good attitude and a pulse? Then maybe you can skip a step, but you'd better figure that one out yourself.

The first big bike I rode was a CB500. It is faster than 95% of the cars on the road, unless you live in Mugello, or Stuttgart. It has big bike weight, and medium bike power. Perfect for learning on after you've convinced yourself the 125's and 250's are too small.

So, take some lessons, and figure this one out.

Good luck.

It's the unexpected power delivery, an inline 4 is twice as "snappy" as a parallel twin. If I'm ok with the inline 4 then I'm definatly ok with the paralell twin. But i still stand by what i said with the previous post (the long one).

why are you guys up so late? I didnt know this thread would get so many responses in the couple of hours I was finishing up my Crime and Punishment literary analysis.

getting a motorcycle license isnt too hard. since your underage, you need to take a MSF course. get a permit sometime during the course (or after, it doesnt matter) then if you pass the MSF you can waive your real test, then get your license, voila.

but of course that process took me over a couple of months.

and for a bike...

just go get a hayabusa, i dont care

just kidding dont get a hayabusa

I don't know why anyone else is awake at 3:00 in the morning.

Before you get too set on the 650 you should also give your insurance company a call. The difference in price to insure them may make the more powerful bike too expensive.

Dirt bike experience isn't that great. Sure, you know how to balance, use the clutch/gear change and to some spirited riding. There are also some habits to unlearn.

Anyway- doesn't prepare you for speed, traffic, hugging corners, setting up turns, emergency manuevers etc.

Street is a different beast my friend.

Start small. Speeds fun but my 550 cc vtwin can get me to 120 in a hurry. I will never get near that where I do most my riding. My most fun riding happens as 20-45 mph when I'm in the twisties.

Start at max with the 650r and the sv650. Try out the gs500 the ninja 500 and other bikes. They have enough power to out accelerate a porche, why would you need more?

Once you've refined your skills move to another bike. And no- you won't be getting there anytime soon. I guarantee it.

Sev- don't you have a few videos of racers saying they'd never ride a race replica bike on the street? Are those youtube? Can we get them in the beginners section as a sticky?
