no one is going to impound your bike for riding on a learners permit. I think Lionlady might have been hitting the moonshine a bit too hard :)
Check NY it is different here

new york must be one of the states i wasnt aware of :) seems you guys are in the minority though.
New Jersey is like that too, no solo riding on a permit.

"You must be accompanied by a New Jersey licensed motorcyclist on a separate motorcycle to practice, and must practice with a permit for at least 20 days before being eligible to take the road test."

Of course if they ask if you came with a chaperone do the honorable thing: Lie.

A better question is what's the testing procedure?

In Va the first step involves you doing... wait for it... wait for it... nothing!

Yep, the testor INSPECTS your bike for safety. If your clutch is a problem, you won't be allowed to ride. If it's b/c the clutch is 35 years old and never been serviced- shame on you. Worse, if it has a recent inspection and the clutch is 35 years old and in any state of disrepair then the guy who inspected your bike can get fined, have their license revoked and probably get fired from their job.

But yeah, I rode there and told them i came with a friend who didn't want to wait for me.

in ny the person with the motorcycle license drives a car or truck and drives the DMV guy around, while your buudy is driving the DMV guy is watching you drive the bike. When you do the 8's he gets out of the vehicle to watch you, then you go from there! So there is no way to say that somebody drove with you as they would still be with you. In ny they wont impound the bike they will give you a ticket for driving out of class and make you leave the bike or get a licensed driver with you.

Also in my area they are always doing checkpoints and they make you show proof of license and registration and insurance, kinda BS because they dont do that to cars they flag them by. I usually get stopped like 1-3 times a month.

Damn, I hate being wrong, even it was only partially:

For State of PA

1505. Learner's permits.
(C) Operation of motorcycle - A motorcycle learner's permit entitles the person to whom it is issued to operate a motorcycle only between sunrise and sunset and, except for a driver licensed to drive another class of vehicle, only while under the instruction and immediate supervision of a licensed motorcycle operator. Motorcycle learners shall not carry any passenger other than an instructor properly licensed to operate a motorcycle.

so you can ride alone on a learners permit, as long as you're already licensed to drive a car already. I guess I never realized that because most people have their car licenses first before they get a moto license, so they can legally ride the bike alone.

hmmm
