Check the battery first. If it's a sealed type it should have at least 13 volts, if it's vented you're looking at about 12.5 or less.

A dead battery won't have enough juice to turn the starter motor. It does not sound like something that will require you tear apart the engine.

What sound happens when you press the start button?

Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

Cool- so what happens when you press the starter button? You still haven't told us- that will give us more details to provide better information.

Stuck my neck out!

#15 Unread post by Moses »

The battery seems fully charged its less than a year old . when I press the start button Nothing happens Im begining to think its locked up . I drained the oil and took out the oil filter not bits or chunks but the oil was kinda clean and the filter was spotless. I tryed to shift it around today but only had frist gear and neutral I tryed turning the rear wheel but it would not move. only if I pulled the clutch it, and even then rather hard to move the wheel. I think I may pull the head off and take a look. Im running out of ideas. If this is seized up will it be able to be re-built? Is ther any one who rebuild these engines like a re manufactured "Jasper" Or like a crate motor? Is there any place that will have one done and i ship them the core in exchange for a rebuilt. Is there any one who would rebuild this engine that does it full or part time that will do a quality job? Can I get a rebuild kit with gaskets seals bearings or must I buy it all piece meal and who sell this at a good price. Thanks I dont want to part this out it has a lotta soul!! :?

Did you try starting it on the center stand?

Is it or isn't it? Test it! :frusty: Less than a year old doesn't matter if the thing has sat cold for that "less than a year". Test it, if it is rechargable, recharge it! If it is dead, dump it and get a new one.

If the bike is in gear the wheel will not freely move. That's why it only moves when you pull the clutch in. That's what the clutch if for, to connect the engine to the rear wheel (in a large broad generalization).

You said you are running out of ideas. I think you should stop thinking. You;re going to burn out. Don't be too quick to jump on a rebuild because you got flustered and impatetient. Stay the course on troubleshooting all the peripherals of what makes the bike start. Once those test have been exhausted with still no positive results, then dive into the engine.

Listen to the suggestions that have been given to you. We are helping you troubleshoot by recommending what you need to be testing. Help us help you

Thanks for the encourgement Short I see your US Navy EX - Seabee here! you know the seabee motto " Can Do" I will get this bike going . Your correct about the battery I cant get used to how small they are and how much attention they need, Im taking a day or two off to finish up my Yamaha XT 250 then back to the Kawasaki . Some times you just need to walk away from it for a bit! Thanks all ! Moses

Pull the spark plugs and try spinning the back wheel. :frusty:

Trying to tell if your engine is locked up by looking at the oil and pushing a starter button is the Hard Way.

Shorts is right. Stop thinking so much. Start diagnosing. Make sure the motor turns over. If it does, time to prove the electrical system is working. Start at the source (battery) and test all the wiring to the end device (starter). Then move on to the ignition system, engine compression, carburetion, etc until you fix whatever the problem is. Only if all that fails should you consider a rebuild.

And you must test these things. Looking and guessing sucks as a diagnostic tool.
No Witnesses.... :shifty:
