Parking lot suprise!!

#1 Unread post by Gilfy650a »

So i parked at the end of the parking lot at work tonight, parallel with the curb. and about an hour into my shift the security guard comes up to me and hands me a note....

Name Omitted just knocked over your bike...

Eff i thought, so i got up and went outside to check the damage, and the bike was knocked over onto the curb so the engine and the right rear turn signal hit.

Well, i hope those fins on the engine are not too important cause i lost some good sized chunks of 3 of them and my right rear signal is all covered in smash. Also the top tip of the exhaust flare got a little scraped up. :(

The turn signals are not that big of a deal 14 bucks at most, and the exhaust was already scratched up on that side, so that wasnt a major loss. Luckily some dude gave me a 83 650 parts bike and i have a good cylinder block on that.. only problem is I called my mechanic and asked him how much that would cost to replace if i had the part and he said " Around $400 bucks labor.

The guy drove off before i got out there so i called the cops, and we filled out an accident report and we got in touch with the guy who hit me and he said that as long as its a couple hundred bucks he'd be cool with reimbursing me for the damage. Which is all it should cost, that is if the cylinder block on the parts bike is any good....

OR

I could put the money in my savings account toward saving up for a 599... that is if those fins aren't that important, also can i glue the fins back on? i figure i could sand them out so they are not crappy looking and epoxy them back in place and repaint that area?

Ideas?

Changeing cylinder blocks without changing rings, pistons(if needed) and bearings is a no-no. So really, it means your rebuilding most of the engine as your only a head-job away from a full-on redo(and if your spending that much on the block swap, your nuts not to rebuild the head at the same time). 4 bills in labor will be the cheap part.

But that's just how I would do it, if it was my bike. Others might be comfortable with a more slap-up job.

Those fins are 'cooling fins' and they do serve a function. Cooling your engine. You can get away with missing a few bits of fins but too much missing in one spot will cause a hotspot in the cylinder it cools and could cause damage if bad enough.

Epoxying the fins back on won't help much, even if you can get them to not break off. Epoxy doesn't conduct heat well enough to be of much use.

How much fin area is missing?

If the guy knocked your bike down it doesn't really matter if he's "cool" with reimbursing you, he's responsible for the damage. All the damage.

Was it legally parked?

Ditto that. Ask him for his insurance, file a claim and sic your insurance company on them. You shouldn't have to pay a dime.

wow that really pissed me off to read this thread. this doofus had the audacity to actually to say "as long as its a few hundred bucks"???

you werent even around. besides this a-hole left the scene of a accident HE caused. he has to be accountable for that as well, not only the damage. make him go through his insurance and if he wants, he can give you cash instead and keep it hush hush. what a schmuck. i picture myself in this situation and thats what makes me so mad. maybe he should retake his road test.

I'd have called the cops right then and there, left the bike where it was and filed a hit-and-run report, THEN see who dictates terms on how much he (or his insurance) pays.

ya really hit and run isnt anything to joke around about. the security guard was lucky enough to get the guys info other wise youd be screwed. file a police report and contact Hist insurance make them pay. or if you feel like negotiating tell them guy you plan to fil file a police report for hit and run and contact his insurance and explain how much thats going to cost him. in rate increases and tickets. either he full pays the damges whatever they are out of pocket or you proceed with legal action.

if it were me, id just with legal action. he may try to give you a run around then it looks bad on your part if you ever do file a report for taking so long.

I'd of just run over if a few times blame all the damage on him... make his insurance write it off as a total loss .. then you'd have enough money for your new bike.. depending on how much they'd give you for your bike I guess..He didnt know how much damage was done since he drove away any how. :pbjt: It would be your word against his... and his word wouldnt be sh*t since he drove off...
