Yes we get some snow every year. And cold. I'll ride anytime it's above 40°F or so.

I've put 6000 to 7000 on so far this season.

We get snow and ice in Iowa.
Will begin riding in mid April and stop about the end of October.
The main reason I will not ride is the chemicals they use on the roads to melt the ice, they have a very negative effect on metal, so I don't ride until there have been some good rains.

It snows here very rarely - when it does, barracade yourself in your house...people in the deep south do not know how to drive in the snow.

So far this year 2700 mi on the C-90 and 4100 on the Sporty for a total of 6800 miles.

It won't last long. If there's one thing I've learned about the internet, it's that there's ALWAYS someone out there who's bigger and badder than you. I expect we'll hear from some IBA type rider soon who has put eleventy hundred thousand miles on his BMW GS since 1 Jan of this year. He's probably in Alaska right now with no internet access.

Do you NYC/NJ-area riders put your bikes away for any of the winter months? I've heard mixed views on that - the dude I bought my Ninja from looked astonished when I suggested actually riding it in the wintertime (though we've had some mild winters) while others seem to have no problem with it.

I wouldn't ride in the snow & ice (particularly around here) but I don't mind getting some winter gear for cold weather. I'm more worried about the bike than I am about me.

I'm a MI man and ride all year round (assuming no ice is out there). I also don't ride when there is a thin layer of salt powder on the road, I'll wait a few days until the cars have cleared it. Other than that, you're not going to hurt the bike. If you do get salt on it, rinse it off when you get home.

i've ridden more and more during the winter over the past few years. This last winter my bike was down for repairs and since it was cold I was lazy about getting it repaired to ride.
This season, I plan on having some heated gear, so I expect to be riding any time there isnt snow ,ice, or 1,000 mph winds.

I bought my bike in February and started riding it right away. If it was below freezing I wouldnt ride though, out of fear of ice patches. But I did ride a bunch of times when it was in the upper 30's and 40's. I think I had like 3 layers including thermal underwear on and I was able to stay warm.

But your hands are the weak link. Even with thick, thermal-lined leather gloves my hands would start to go numb after 30 minutes or so. So maybe invest in some heated grips if you are planning to ride year-round, or a pair of those hardcore snowmobile gloves.

Another spot that can get really cold is your neck, where the cold air gets underneath the helmet. A scarf or one of those thermal neck-warmer things is a must have.
