Can-Am Spyder

What do you guys think of this vehicle?

Spyder

I'm thinking of it for a replacement for my car. It gets 40 mpg, which is better than all non-hybrid cars I can find out there lately (which is really weird, even cars like the fit don't get 40mpg, but my 1992 Honda Civic had 40 mpg on the sticker for highway - and actually got 40 mpg - no matter what I did to it).

Anyway, I'd split commuting duties between my Ninja 250 and this. Bad weather - I'd ride the Can-Am. Terrible weather, I'd take the train.

I've seen one around town and it's pretty cool looking. Looks like it rides more like a car than a bike...I prefer the MP3 to it (even out a deposit down on one and am just waiting for it to get in....) mostly because I want to lean like I would on a bike. MPG is a little better on the MP3, too.

It's just a personal preference. The Spyder seems like an awesome ride all the way around.

its a pretty nice ride, i saw them at the bike shop and felt it, pretty comfy.
you can do lots of drifting with that powerful back wheel

$20000 is reasonable

Fantastic toy, but I dunno if it would make a good replacement for a car though (carrying capacity, safety and weather protection obviously come to mind). It's way more fun of course, but you've already got the bike for that. If you hardly need the car, why not just sell it, take the train or a cab when weather or cargo dictate it, and otherwise ride, ride, ride!

it's a snowmobile with 3 wheels instead of tracks.

i bet it's fun as heck, and i wouldn't mind playing around on one, but at the end of the day i like 2 wheeled motorcycles.

Well, right now I use the car with my kids, but we actually don't need two cars that carry the kids as my wife usually has them.

So, in terms of replacing my car - it is just for my commute - and just for when the weather is bad enough that I don't want to ride the two-wheeler.

Mass transit is nice, but it makes my commute take a lot longer. I'd only do it if the weather was soooo bad that driving in would take longer than the 2 hour train ride and getting there on time to catch the train.

So, Can-Am for heavy rains, but not heavy snow. Not hurricane either.

Oh, no question that I like two-wheelers. But the times where I don't want to be on two in inclement weather I think this might be a good alternative. It gets way better mileage than my car.

It could also be a nice alternate vehicle while the two-wheeler is getting work done.

I put a minimum of 64 miles a day on the bike - sometimes much more up to 114 miles a day - and I don't think my Ninja is really built for that. At least most of the miles are on the highway.

Yeah, I haven't sat on one yet, I'm going to try it out sometime. Everyone that tries it that writes online or has a picture of them seems to have a smile.

Hard to get around here even when paying $4-5k over MSRP. Used ones are selling for $19k

Is the car already paid off? If so, every bit of your MPG savings with this will go out the window with the first payment on the Spyder. If getting rid of the car would be getting rid of the car payment, I'd make sure that the payment on the Spyder was considerably less than the car payment, otherwise, again, the savings just isn't there.

Also, while I'm sure it'd be a bit more stable than a motorcycle in inclement weather, you'd still be getting wet, unlike you'd be in a car.

All of this is not to say that the Spyder isn't cool. I test rode one locally when they were having a demo day and it was definitely cool. Rides 100% different than a motorcycle, very responsive, lack of front brake lever took some getting used to, and you feel like you are going to get thrown off when you take a sharp turn very fast.

If I had the extra funds, I'd get one, but I can't see it being a replacement for a bike (unless I became physically incapable of riding) or a car.
