It starts, but then doesn't 5 minutes later

#1 Unread post by Chemical Duke »

Hey everyone, thanks for having me on this forum

I recently purchased a 2006 Honda Shadow Spirit 750. I got it about 3-4 weeks ago and it worked great. Had to charge the battery once a week ago and already replaced the spark plugs. Started it up today, let it idle for about 4 minutes then it died. Tried to start it back up and the starter wouldn't even turn, just an annoying click from the battery. Dead battery right? I tried it again about an hour later and it started right up and ran fine. I shut it down and tried to start it again and just the same clicking noise. The lights, turn signal, and horn work fine even when it wont start.

Is the battery just bad? or is there a short somewhere? do i need a new starter?

Please help me, the weather is beautiful and I can't ride!

As batteries don't generally gain and lose charge randomly, I would be looking for a loose, corroded or bad connection someplace. Probably in the cables to the starter.
No Witnesses.... :shifty:

I just had this problem on my bike. Found the wires going to the stator motor 1 was cut in half, second was almost cut in half, and the third wire was starting to wear through. So I put quick disconnect terminals on the 3 wires and then put heat shrink over them to keep water out.

check for corrosion in and around the fuses.

glad to hear BUT I would still go over all the wiring. I put a new battery in my bike and it lasted about 2 months before it died because of bad wiring.

ya i agree with ofblong
something else to make sure you do is start up the bike and while its idling unhook the battery. if it keeps running well it means the alternator is fine.

put a meter on the battery connections and rev it.
the voltage should be around 14 volts - that means it's charging.

between that and all the wiring you should be good.
