This link is a good starting point.

If the carbs were just rebuilt I'm not sure why you're not getting fuel. Are you holding the throttle open when you try to start it? If not try that and see if the plugs get wet. If it still doesn't make sure they put the jets back in and cleared them out completely.

Just recently had some trouble with a '82 GS450 that had spark and fuel but wouldn't fire. It turned out to be the ground from the CDI box (this one has a ground to the electrical panel, go figure). It actually had good spark but after fixing the CDI ground, it had GREAT spark.

Good luck, keep us posted...

If the fuel petcock is vaccuum actuated, then you may have to turn it to prime before fuel will get to the carbs. Then turn it back to run...

On the tank there is a vacume actuvated set up . but there is no prime setting . only fuel - reserve. i`m still trying LOL . o i put the wire on a ground and the spark looks better . i ran out of battery . on charge , thanks .

Maybe i`ll get it running for Chrismass .

First off, have you acquired a manual for your bike? If not I recommend you get one.

I do know the '78 550 has electronic ignition, so the '80 should have it too.

Its electronic, they all are (GS500twin NEVER came with points)
Sitting probably gunked up the carbs, they need cleaning properly, particularly pilot and starting circuits. The pilot screw had an EPA plug and is factory pre-set so you need to drill out plug, count turns to bottom screw (gently) and write numbers down so you can put it together properly
