New to the forum!

I used to be part of another forum, i believe it was BeginnerBikes.com, but it was shut down from what i understand...those were the days of my 78 kawasaki kl250, haha...it worked, i can say that. so now i have a 1981 honda cx500 custom. got it on ebay for 250 bucks and im bringing it to life. im sure i will be in the technical issues section shortly, as i dont have a manual, haha. i hope to have some pictures shortly, i wish i couldve done some before shots to accompany my planned after shots...oh well. hindsight is 20/20 right? well, heres a list of what ive done, and in the process of doing as of now...
-rebuilt front brake master cylinder/bled system (vac pumps rule! )
-Kreemed tank/performed custom paint job
-sanding and polishing alot of parts
I was almost disappointed that i didnt need to rebuild my front caliper, because i wouldve LOVED to have taken that old paint off and polish it as well. I did my paint job on my tank with spray paint too...doesnt look like it tho, id love to hear others opinions when i get some pics. ok, im done for now...i love online forums..im on one for ym car and its just awesome..im hoping this will be as equally valuable a resource.

Total Motorcycle.com has warmly taken in a lot of BeginnerBikes.com's old members (since they closed) so you are likely to bump into quite of few of them on here. We also have a New Bikers Forum that is always packed with questions, answers and new members.



Feel free to post in the Total Motorcycle Garage as we have a lot of knowledgable moderators and members that will gladly help you out with things. The Honda CX500 was a good bike in it's day, quite reliable forsure. The CX650 (and CX650E) did improve on that bike, but the CX500 is still a recommended reliable bike in our guide. I'm looking forward to seeing some photos of your bike soon.

Welcome Tx,

I'm real new to this forum as well, but will be really interested in hearing about how your restoration goes. I've been highly tempted a number of times to look for a bike to salvage and bring back to life. My biggest worry though, is that I find my ambition to be greater than either my mechanical abilities or my parts budget.
Keep us up to date on how yourrestoration goes though. I'd like to see what I'd be likely getting myself into if I did try it.

flite--yeah man, i think my biggest concern is financial. the last restoration i tried was on a 1973 dodge charger. real sweet ride..however, my money got thinned out too quick between restoring the car AND making payments on the car itself..let alone other miscellaneous bills. but anyway, yeah ill definitely keep everyone who's interested posted. i think i may even go take a few pictures. my project is actually in really good shape, im lucky. but you should see the parts bike i got for 75 bucks! if someone wanted to try to bring it back to life, i think it would look at them square in teh face like this lol

Old bike restoration can get pricey.

I purchased a 1978 Suzuki GS550 for $300 that was all there, but was in near-junkyard shape, and didn't run! (what was I thinking at the time, I don't know...haha)

After 70 good solid hours and about $850 in parts, it was running again. I sold the bike for $1300.

I did learn quite a bit about older bikes restoring it from the ground up, so it was a good experience.
