First Encounter with Wildlife

I'm way to new to have seen an animal to confront. But my friend just hit a cow on the 2nd of February. He was swinging around a corner at night, and since here in Arizona cows can legally be in the middle of the road...well he tried to brake but he had skid marks of about 40 feet when he hit the cow so he was booking it. Probably going about 50. It lead to 7 broken ribs, hypoxia, internal bleeding, ruptured spleen, and the spleen's acid lead to his stomach being removed. He's pulling through now though, esophogus is now attached to his small intestines. I'm definitely taking alot from the experience. Wild animals should not be taken lightly.l

I had an encounter with a deer last year on my V-strom.

I was following a packed gravel road with 6' growth on either side of the road, I was going about 50km/h, great day, sunny, warm, out with my wife on her bike behind me.

A flick of colour in the growth beside me indicated something was there, a quick reaction I pulled in the clutch and the front brakes, as I was reaching to do this (split-second) the deer emerged right beside me at speed. Stunned how quick it moved and how close it was my reaction was a little slower. As I started to slow down, it dashed into the woods (whew)... then came out again not a second later! I was prepared this time, it jumped in front of me about 6" away from my front tire and "sprayed" me, my bike, helmet, you name it. Great!

But it ended ok as it jumped back in and was gone. But what a story.

You should always be prepared for the unexpected. Sometimes it just takes practice to prepare for the unexpected quicker.

It's a normal part of braking, Penguin. I think he was just parsing out his moves a bit.
