Could you buy some CE certified armor (don't forget quality back armor; even the regular jacket makers usually use crummy foam padding) and bring it with you? just make sure--as mentioned above--they use thicker leather than they normally use for the jackets otherwise it won't offer any substantial protection and see about getting some inside pockets made for armor and most places will offer a zip-out liner option.
