Your weight and bikes

I see questions about the weight of bikes, but I wonder how many of us consider our own weight when looking at bikes. In SA, we have some big guys, especially amongst the dutch South Africans (Afrikaners) and some big girls too.

I have seen 130 plus kg guys on 600's, makes them look like mini moto's. I have also been laughed at climbing on my GS, coz I look like a tick on an Elephant.

I've been called a monkey procreating with a football when I climb on a 600...
I'm DOWN to 137 kilos so yes I consider the poor suspension on bikes when I ride them. You ought to see how it looks when I test ride my sister's little Ninja 250...
This is one of the reasons I want a big bike like a Busa or a DL1000 or an Adventure 990.

Hi, My 99 Kg and the GS550 are pretty well matched. I haven't found anything newer as good a fit.

The biggest would be the 2010 Harley-Davidson Street Glide FLHX at 810lbs. I'm 6'4", 160lbs.

Below is the 2010 Harley-Davidson Fat Bob CVO below which was 719lbs. (Sorry, I don't have one of me on the FLHX).

My 2007 Suzuki V-Strom DL650 was the tallest bike I've rode and that did feel like a big bike, but fit me very well.

As in "Slender and elegant"?

I've never been able to put on much weight, even when I was in the Army for a very short stint and had to gain weight. (7 full meals a day for two months = just a few pounds)

The problem is finding motorcycles that fit me. I'm sure anyone over 6' has the same issue as well. I would LOVE to own many different bikes but they just don't fit. (The older V-Max comes to mind, or a Triumph Speed Triple or a Ducati monster... etc, etc.)

If I was 6'4" I would get the R1200GS Adventure!

Always liked them but way too tall for me.

I am 5'7" 85 KG, so now you know what I look like on a GS or an adventure. I get birds coming to try and pick me off.

The BMW R1200GS Adventure is a big bike, no doubt about it. I'm sure I'd fit on it, but I did notice the taller the bike the more side winds you have to put up with on the highway... (or maybe it was just me and a light tall bike).

I'm sure my Bonneville would accelerate better if I dropped 30 lbs......... aah, t'hell with it! Acceleration is overrated anyway. Pass the pie!

As for the GS, out of all the bikes, this one feels the wind less than any other. The K1200S and the VFR and the 600RR all feel it more with the full fairings. Side winds on the GS sort of blow through. Even better if you are loaded with panniers. Solid on the road.

At 5'10" and around 100kg my bandit 600 fit me about perfectly. I find I fit well on most street bikes, I guess im fairly close to the "average" size they design them around. Though I find the larger harleys (road kings and glides) to be almost a tad large for me (guess the average harley rider is a bit bigger than I am).

Ah, 5'10"... sounds like a pretty good size for picking almost any bike.

Some of the Harley's fit me really well at 6'4 like the Dyna Wide Glide, Fat Bob, Fat Boy and any H-D Tourer. But there are some H-D's too small like all the Sportsters (883 and 1200cc), and the new H-D VRSC's as well as any of the lowered models and CVO convertable. So there are H-D's out there for shorter/smaller riders.

If you are really short the new 2011 Harley-Davidson XL 883L Sportster 883 SuperLow would fit.

At 5'9 / 160 lbs, I really enjoyed riding the 2003 Gold Wing with my wife. Now that she rides along less, I have switched to a 2005 Yamaha FJR1300, and enjoy the much lighter, nimbler feel. I do miss the wing sometimes, though.

"Lighter" "nimbler" are not qualities I often associate with FJRs..... but I guess coming from a Goldwing, it's all relative!

Especially considering that I am no longer riding with a passenger, the combined weight is far less.

I am 6'-1" and pushing 245 lbs. I am also limited to bike selection. For many tears I rode a 1989 ZX7R and loved it. Recently while bike shopping, I found a newer ZX10 and loved it BUT... I am to freekin tall, or I should say, my legs don't fit with the new contours of the plastic and my feet were at the wrong angle for optimal control. Back to the monkey and the football thing, but not quite the same. The old ZX7R was narrower and had no problem accomidating me. I must also say that my wife is much happier on the single type seat of my Bandit than sitting stadium style of the ZX10. I am getting older (I will never admit that to my wife) LOL but the fit of the Bandit for me is really good.
