I think the UJM started to fade away after the naked Bandit's and ZRX died (2005/6), which was unfortunate because I think the UJM offers a great package. It's light, it can go anywhere, it's comfortable to ride and be a passenger on and it was inexpensive.
Bah, it seems the majority of the North American market is split into two segments, the high school boys who want to ride the "gofasta" bikes and the old men who ride the cruisers. The young riders don't want naked bikes when they can go get the same bike with plastic. Older riders don't want to hurt their backs, poor grandpa. Buell would have been my bike of choice, American bike and all, looks great naked, then Harley came along and killed it.
The faster the bike I get, the less of a coffin I'm gonna need, more like a ziplock bag.
I will say I am definitely more of a naked bike fan. To me, a fairing takes the fun out of the ride and covering up the motor with plastics hides the beauty.
