Motorcycle helmet laws (Graphic Map) and injury.

#1 Unread post by totalmotorcycle »

In 2007, per registered vehicle, the fatality rate for motorcyclists was 6 times the fatality rate for passenger car occupants! In Oklahoma alone, in 2008, 74% of those killed in motorcycle accidents were not wearing helmets. It is critical that motorcyclists understand the severity of head injuries they can sustain in a motorcycle crash and how to best protect themselves from injury.

McIntyre Law, P.C. have compiled the following infographic to help motorcyclists understand state motorcycle helmet laws, fatality statistics for helmeted and non-helmeted motorcyclists, as well as, the correlation between helmet laws and motorcycle fatalities. With this information, motorcyclists can make better decisions to help keep our roads safe.

Motorcycle deaths per million population is an inappropriate comparative statistic, because it does not account for varying rates of motorcycle ownership in the states' general population. Even deaths per 100,000 registrations by year is misleading, because it does not account for other variables, such as miles travelled, etc.

This law firm is presenting (weak) data correlations, and hoping people interpret them as causative data relationships. Well, they're hardly a disinterested party, are they? Think they might have a vested interest in drumming up fear and hysteria?

It's genuinely difficult to create fair statistics providing for large and diverse areas such as the entire US, but I think it's a decent job.

I think the important message is that helmets help, but only good riding habits with a dash of luck will save your neck.

You don't need stats to tell you that helmets save lives and reduces the severity of the injury. It's utterly amazing how some anti-helmet idiots will try to refute this. I think motorcyling is the only sport that has these idiots. I don't hear any baseball players saying that batting helmets do not save lives or reduce the severity of an injury, not football players, nor amateur boxer, etc etc etc

What about full face v open face? I wonder if there are any statistics for that.

I do remember maxillo facial surgeons commenting on the reduction of devastating face on head injuries when compulsory seatbelts were introduced here in UK.

I will ask around & let you know if I can find out any medical statistics relating to this discussion.
