Railroad Tracks

I am a new rider, i just got a 2005 Honda shadow lvx 600... i have been reading all the posts in here, i am very glad i found this site it has answered many of my questions. I only have one more than no one seems to be able to answer, i read the manual for the dmv before i had taken the test, one of the questions on there particularly pertaining to the book was when approaching railroad tracks what should you do, the answer was approach at a 45 degree or slight angle suh as that to cross, i ask everyone around at work or friends that all have a lisence they cant seem to answer that for me, only can tell me they usually set themselves up for the 90 degrees..... whats the answer and why?

Motorcyles can usually cross safely as long as the angle is at least 45 degrees. Obviously the more the better and 90 degrees being the ideal. This however is when the tracks is perpendicular to the road. If the track is angled, never try to cross it at a 90 degree angle as this will aim you towards oncoming traffic or the side of the road. Always cross so you are headed properly in your lane, and always at least at a 45 degree angle.

Other than that, keep in mind most railroad tracks are elevated, so the proper technique is to drop a gear, pin the throttle, and catch some air over that bad boy! (Kidding of course).

lol, Thank you! I of coarse have a bit of common sence i have rode over the tracks before but obviously with the question on the permit and talking with other riders i was curios for what is proper. I must also say that i love this site, i have followed it for a week or so now and have read some very intresting debates i love the open discussions and the site layout, it is very easy to navigate around and find answers.

The next step to try is riding over a cow grate. Some can be quite tricky to ride over, others are easier but you always have to be very careful of them when it's raining or they are wet.



Ride over them just like RR tracks. Some ride fast over them when dry, others slow.
