1 month, 2500mi, and 1 crazy idea

#1 Unread post by capena91 »

Hey you guys, it has been awhile since I wrote here. Mostly because any free time I had I was on my bike riding around lol. Well Its been around a month and a week since I have had my new 09' FZ6R and I have put 2500mi of work in it. I love it so much, it is my daily commuter between home (Pasadena) and work (Long Beach) and for any other place I go. But sadly my summer in the beautiful SoCal is coming to an end and in 3 weeks (first day of class is Aug. 29) from today I have to be back in Washington DC for school.

And here is my crazy idea...

I want to take a rode trip on my bike back to DC. I know its a long trip, I know I am still a new rider, my bike may not be the best for long trips, and DC's weather isn't the greatest for bikes. But I know that any clear day in DC, I am going to be depressed missing my bike and the open road. I would mostly take the I-40 and would see great places. I really wouldn't want to leave my bike at home (especially with my dad and brother...)

Is it possible, what would I need, how many days should I give my self for the trip...or should I just forget about it :(

I'd do some research into a secondary highway route. Much more interesting than riding the slab. It'll take longer so you'll have to make time for it. Just don't ride when you're over tired and don't rush.

I know that it would be a lot more interesting and beautiful, but I still have to consider my budget and time, since I still have to get to school lol.

Honestly if you worked your butt off you could make it in three days. Personally I'd say you should allot yourself something along the lines of a week to make it. 5 500 mile days is a bit, but do-able, 7 350 mile days is a lot more thinkable.
The only problem I could see if getting all of your school stuff back over there.
What's your other option? Driving? If so I'd suggest searching the local craigslist/junkyard for a hitch, putting it on, and pulling a very small trailer with your bike on it.

all my stuff is at school already so I don't have to worry about that, I was thinking of 5 500's.

Since you're thinking of your budget, think of what a superslab run across the continent is going to do to your tires.

Definitely keep that in mind because of the budget.

Sure, compared to SoCal.

Give yourself plenty of time in case you run into issues. 6-7 days is ideal if you've never ridden that long. I've done a few 1200 mile days when the mood struck me, but often I get bored by 500 miles no matter what roads I find.
