By the very nature of the award, it would have to be. You only get an honourable mention if you survive.
Always ask why.

I’ll go with “Complete friggin’ idiot”. Personally I am anti flip flop altogether. They were invented for beach wear and have become daily attire everywhere and at all times for the majority of people. I figure in a generation we will have a nation of people with deformed feet as a result. (Have any of your noticed there are a lot of pigeon toed teenage girls these days? Maybe a result of trying to keep those damn flip flops on.) I don’t always wear boots when riding but a sturdy pair of shoes at least. Unless you have a heal shifter I don’t know how you can shift in flip flops and not hurt the top of your left foot.

Slight deviation from thread but ........

I have a lot oif problems with my feet. This despite the fact that I have rarely worn high heels & I thought that bare feet (hippy dippy country life) & flatties were good for the feet.

Having seen many specialists I have been told frquently that flat or flip flops are really BAD for feet. Partly because in urban life we are constantly on flat hard surfaces.

The experts are indeed seeing younger people with feet problems because of flip flops & pumps.

Coming from a state with no helmet law (Rhode Island) I see more people ride without helmets than with. Personally, hospitals scare me to death, so I never get on without one. The other stuff is optional in my opinion...but shorts and flip-flops is just asking for trouble. I got a bad exhaust pipe burn on my leg as a teenager, so I never wear shorts either. Live and learn.
I just hope the folks in the OP's story dont learn the hard way.

Anyone who's ever spent a couple of hour getting gravel out of their kneees with a nailbrush isn't going to wear shorts on their bike again - and maybe not jeans. I wear the full gear. It won't save you from everything - I've got friends who are dead to prove it - but it helps. Don't forget the cagers are out to get you - wear bright stuff! :boat:

Good point. For all intensive purposes there's little protection gained wearing regular jeans instead of shorts.

On asphalt I agree, but if you fall in gravel (like I did last weekend) I disagree...I dumped my bike at 50-55kph (32-35mph) and have a slight scratch on my left knee...I would have had it much worse if I were in shorts...

I'm not saying they are a replacement for riding pants, but they are definitely better than shorts...
