If a motorcycle offered different engine choices...

#1 Unread post by totalmotorcycle »

Let's say they made a full sized motorcycle (cruiser, sportbike, touring bike) with different engine choices like they do cars and trucks... Would you take advantage of that?....

V-Twin, Inline 4, Parallel Twin, Triple, different engine cc sizes.... The choice would be up to you. Why should cars and trucks be the only ones who get different engines? Maybe a Yamaha R1 in 250cc Parallel Twin would be cool, the 500cc Triple R1 sounds neat or go for the Yamaha R1 in a 2000cc V-Twin!

I really wish it would be done with the supersports. It would enable people to satisfy their vanity, and ride a sensible learner bike

arent bikes really designd around the engine, everything is based on how big the engine is(dimension wise). how much it weighs, balance etc. then a bike designd to handle that engine? at least sport bikes seem to be that. i think it would be much harder to have a universal bike setup then allow someone to drop any engine into it. i could be way wrong but just from my limited knowledge thats how it seems.

cars have more room to work with and dont need to worry about balance and space issues.

but if it were possible id sure take advantage ; ) an r6 bike with a nice looking massive v twin

Yeah but there's no actual reason that you couldn't drop a smaller engine into a frame designed for a large one. creating a bike which is desirable, but from only the riders point of view, a more controlable beast

I would definately take advantage of it myself as well! Just think of the possibilities! You would no longer be faced with this or that bike because it has that engine in it only...

Maybe a Harley-Davidson Sportster could use a 883cc Inline 4 or 900cc Triple! How about a Suzuki Savage 650cc offered in a 650cc V-Twin or 650cc Inline 4 as well as the 650cc Single it is offered in now? This would open up the market to those who love the Savage due to its seat height but have outgrown the 650cc Single horsepower.

If you could get a full-sized bike with a smaller (lighter) engine that would make it suitable for a beginner, that would be cool.

Then, when you are ready for it, you upgrade to the larger engine, gearcase, belt/chain, axel,....

Might make it cheaper in the long run, and you would not have to re-learn the controls. Just the handling will be different.

Excellent Points! As the motorcycle manufacturers do frequent the Total Motorcycle community forum I wonder if they will get some ideas from this...

Nibblet99 - A 125cc Rocket III? Well, I guess it would be the ultimate heavy weight learning motorcycle! Would you like that a 125cc Inline Triple as well?

Hmm, 3 X 41cc cylinders... Why not. Can it be tuned to the UK learner limit of 15bhp, and move at more than 5 mph?

i read some where that the katana600(the bike i have) is actually a 750cc engine with sleeves and small pistons in it to make it a 600cc engine, anyone know if thats true. and if it is why not do that with other bikes, let someone buy an r1 or whatever but sleeve it so its a 500cc size engine and reduce the power?
