What's the coldest you willingly ride in?

#1 Unread post by Wrider »

So who here rides in the cold? What's the coldest you ride in willingly? What's the coldest you've ever ridden?

I definitely ride in the cold. I'm fine down to 20, then I have to start bundling up. I've ridden down to -10F (-23C).
Have owned - 2001 Suzuki Volusia
Current bike - 2005 Kawasaki Z750S
MMI Graduation date January 9th, 2009. Factory Certifications in Suzuki and Yamaha

For me it really depends on other things as well. Cold and no ice I'll ride I don't like when it starts melting then refreezes and I don't like to ride in snow as my bike doesn't have the tires for it. If I had an enduro I would probably ride all year I do shy away from under 20 but I don't have heated gear or grips so at a certain point it gets a bit painful for me as my sinuses really hurt much below 20.
there aint nothin like it

For me it's been around -10°C or 14°F, you have to watch out for black ice on the roads and if the road has any wetness to it at all. And at stops you have to hold your breath under your full face helmet or you'll ice the inside of it up. Also hypothermia is a real danger as well as wind chill comes on strong as you ride faster. Overall, not so worth the risk unless it's something special (like the annual New Years ride around).

Here is me riding around in the Calgary winter (moons ago):

35 degrees is pretty much my limit, and as cold as it gets, here. I'm not sure what the 75mph wind chill on ride to work calculates out to. Carefully chosen layers and snow-machining mittens keep me warm.
Ooooooh. Shiny!

I don't mind the cold

but I stay off the road when conditions are bad. I don't want some out-of-control car or truck sliding into me.

YIKES!

I've ridden to about -10°C, I guess that's about 14F. I won't ride when it's frosty or icy. Mind you, now that I'm in Texas I'm not sure this discussion is even relevant.

I've been out at 40 deg. For short trips I'm fine with winter gloves and
just my jacket liner and a Flannel shirt. Though for longer trips I've got
overpants and liner.

I've not braved freezing or below yet. I'm wary of ice...
