So happy to have found this forum--just bought a 1984 Honda v30 with only 17k--the bike was stored for 5 years--supprized it even started--test drove today and it ran strong for a 500cc but I hear some very faint popping noise from the exhaust pipes--called a shop for a price to adjust the valves and nearly fell out my chair--($850.00) yes 16 valves is a lot of valves but so is there fee??? My question is how I can do the job myself--my clymer tells me nothing--can anyone give me the proceedure---how and specs for this??
The shop did say it may not be a problem with valves and could simply be gummed jets Carb after sitting so long---but I want to learn to do the valves anyway.
This bike looks sharp all over (plus side for 5 yrs in a garage and for only ( $800)

Hello Bob and welcome to the forum. The first thing I'd do is run a hefty charge of Seafoam to help get those carbs cleaned out. Then you might want to get a service manual from Honda because valve adjustment on that bike is a bear.
People say I'm stupid and apathetic. I don't know what that means, and I don't care.

Thanks for quick reply--can you tell me how much seafom to ad to a full tank of gas (3.7 gal) and how many times I should repeat this? Also can I idle or should I run on the road.
Thanks again Johnny---Bob here.

The seafoam can will tell you how much per gallon to enter. I say just pull the carbs and give them a thorough cleaning. That's something you could easily do yourself and be more effective than seafoam. Also, make sure to change out all the fuel lines at the same time. My old 85 magna lines disintegrated when they encountered ethanol gas. The carbs looked like they were full of marmalade and I had just cleaned them a few days before.

Sold the bike awhile ago but didn't this have hydraulic valves? That might explain the cost, and likely if you're just getting a few pops- not hte problem.

Thank you for your info---what does hte mean?? I like the suggestion of taking carbs apart to clean but will try the seafom first--it was on sale today at napa auto.

Thank you--valves are not the problem (found out they are hydralic) carbs are dirty. Trying seafoam now and if it dont work will clean the hard way.Johnj wrote:hte = typo

On another question--what grade of fuel is best and what type of oil is best--high temp--synthetic or regular 10-30 or 10-40--bike has 17000 on the odometer. Also for general info--found out the 500 v4 does not have the oil to cam problem like the 750 has.

Another problem (I think related to dirty carbs) is the rpm's change on there own--any comment on this?
Forgot to say rpm change only while in neutral or clutch in while stopped--not when accelerating at least not noticed while accelerating or cruising.
THANKS
