1984 Honda XR 100 won't start

#1 Unread post by sammar »

Hey all have a XR 100 here won't start. When u kick it 4 or 5 times it seems to backfire but more of a phewwwwww sound from exaust. I just bought I trying to get it running. The PO put a new carb in before I bought it. Tried starter fluid and still won't start. Definately spark from spark plug. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Is the carb flooded? Maybe a float is stuck is the carb...when you remove a spark plug does it smell like gas or is the plug contact wet?

Sounds to me like it's firing 180° out.

no the plug is not wet though when I remove the plug I can smell the gas. I checked the flywheel timing and when its at TDC the piston is at the top. Not sure how else to check the timing. It is a brand new carb. I do have the old carb. When I went to buy it from the PO i kicked it a few times and it did start to idle as soon as I gave it gas it stalled. I figured this would be an easy fix but I am stumped

i know this has been a long time but i finally had time to work on the bike. I replaced the new carb with the old carb after i cleaned the old carb. the bike now runs. starts on the first kick. when choke is all the way on revs are low. with choke in middle position revs seem normal. with choke in off the revs are very high. I have tried to adjust the mixture as well as the throttle screws but nothing seems to change this.

What your describing sounds like an intake leak.

+1 John, Check the boot that connects the carb and head for cracks and tightness on both sides.
