Knowing riders were camped in the desert overnight with no technical support from their teams, Quintanilla took every precaution to make it to the finish line unscathed to be in the best shape possible for Wednesday’s second half of the marathon. He settled for eighth fastest in Tuesday’s Stage 2 and is now also eighth in the overall standings with a 9:52 min deficit on the current leader Paolo Goncalves and three strong stages left to ride.
Meanwhile organisers canceled the first 105 km of Tuesday’s stage after it was interrupted by a military control and adjustments may be made to Tuesday’s still unofficial results.
That aside, the Chilean is in solid shape and was staying open-minded about what may unfold tomorrow. “When you go for a plan, things might work out as you thought or not. We'll know tomorrow when we're on the road and need make demands on the bike,” he commented.
Tuesday’s stage was also very hard on tyres and Quintanilla and teammate Pela Renet, like factory riders from other teams, will probably decide between them which ones will be the best for Pablo’s second half of the marathon. “Tomorrow is long, with many dunes and navigation. I hope to have a good day,” Quintanilla said.
Riders still have another 315 km to go to complete the marathon stage on Wednesday but those who get back unscathed will again have the assistance of their support teams.
