Moving out of the United States.

Hello

Well, The time has come, I am going to be graduating school in about 2
months and I've been tossing around the Idea of moving out of the USA.
I notice that there are some members here that are from diff countries
and I was just wondering how it is? .. I am graduating from MMI and
about to embark onto my career in the motorcycle field, I guess what
I am asking is, is there a demand for mechanics? .. I am mostly interested
in Europe, like England, Netherlands, somewhere over there, as I have
not been out of the country other than to canada, I am not real familiar
with all the countries. Just would like to get some ideas of what to expect.
Like how is the quality of life over there?? .. I am still pretty young at 22
and probably wouldn't be seriosly thinking about this for atleast a year
or two. Any of your thoughts on this would be appreciated.. Thanks.

2. The UK is bloody EXPENSIVE. Get a job before you move or you will be hurting.

actually, that really goes for anywhere. The different countries still have different laws concerning immigration and work visas ... i don't have any of that info for you, sorry

Why not italy? I was planning on doing my apprenticeship there if I can manage it. Possibly France, but who wants to be an American cook in France?

There is always sunny South Africa, plenty of guy's looking for good mechs, all the manufacturers here, 12 months of the year riding and all the stunning chicks you could ask for.

OK OK if you move to Italy, move to NORTHERN Italy.

Unless you want to work for the (Mafia in Sicily , Camorra in Naples, 'Ndrangheta in Calabria)

Anywhere south of Rome is a nice place to visit, bad place to live. But also keep in mind, Italy is getting pretty expensive too. Germans and Americans w/ Huge pensions buy up property for retirement and drive up the economy. Not to mention the Euro which has cause price increases.

As for the food, the food is great ... but you DEFINITELY need to be up North If you want to be creative with your food. Italian food is simple - it's not an artistic thing like in France. Especially in the south. They've been cooking this way for 200 years, and they frown upon individuality and deviation form the norm... North of Rome it's still traditional, but you may be able to show a little flair without being laughd out of the restaurant.

forget that england stuff! my dear wife was from england.after 3 years of her cooking i had about as much fat on my body as a sack of drill bits.

The biggest problem that you will face is probably predudice. There is a very uncomplementary National stereotype of Americans that America's foriegn policies exacerbate.

In Europe it will probably manifest as bad manners and a bit of verbal. In Britain* you are likely to be teased for being a 'Colonial' and not being able to speak English correctly.

Given time people close to you will realise you are basically a decent human being and shouldnt be blamed for being American, for casual encounters I'd suggest claiming to be Canadian - everyone loves Canadians.

*Britain has been at war with pretty much every other European Nation in the last 1,000 years. Our National Hero's are mostly people who tooled over the European Nations most effectively. This leads to a bit of friction inside the EU. (Witness the 'Bomber' Harris dispute with Germany a couple of years back)

Just be aware that we charge a small surcharge(aprox 85% of your annual income) to all Americans who claim to be Canucks while in foreign countries. More if you behave like a typical American while doing it......
