Helmets and Harleys

#1 Unread post by jmillheiser »

Is it just my imagination or do 99% of Harley riders not wear helmets? I know a grand total of 2 Harley riders that wear helmets (one by choice, one because hes military and is required to).

Is there some unwritten rule of harleydom that states "though shall not wear a helmet". I see way more helmeted riders on non-harleys.

You would think that the percentage of helmeted vs non-helmeted would be pretty much the same for all brands of bike.

Is this just how wyoming is? I see plenty of non-helmeted riders on metric cruisers and sportbikes here too.

PS: I whollly expect to get flamed by Zoo for this one

Part of paying too much for a motorcycle is convincing yourself that you make it cool.

And that includes trying to look like all those people who you think are that cool.

And they didn't wear a helmet. Some of them.

If the law in my state was repealed I would quit wearing a helmet . That would be my personal choice which I have a right to . I don't care what anyone else wears and would really appreciate the same from everyone else . Is that so hard to understand ? I rode without one for over 35 years or better .
Kindest regards, Wizzard
I'm not telling you how to decide.

I'm just saying how a lot of people seem to decide. Both how to buy a bike and whether to cover their brain.

Here in B.C. we have the helmet law.

Harley riders wear skull caps. I think it's an image thing. :o

Non-helmet people seem to consider the issue to be one of personal freedom, which is OK by me. The percentage of riders without helmets who crash, and usually die for it, is so small it barely registers on the statistical scale.
Without helmet laws in most states, however, there would be a lot more deaths, making head protection a much bigger deal, so total repeal of helmet laws everywhere is impractical.

Around here I notice most riders in general don't were helmets. Harley, metric cruisers, or sportbike riders. There is no helmet law in Ohio and that is fine by me. Should be a personal choice. If they don't wanna wear a helmet it doesn't bother me. It's their choice.

Another thing I notice is sportbike riders and tourer riders seem to like to wear shorts when they ride.

I have noticed that Italian girls wear miniskirts and High heels (and no gear) when perched atop their boyfriend's scooter or bike.

And all I have to say is ...

Let it go already. Why does it bother so many of you when you see a non-helmeted rider? Where does this "save the world" mentality come from? And why must they automatically be pompous posers trying to look cool? Maybe they're just not as uptight as you. Or, maybe they are true bikers, not just motorcyclists (there is a difference).

I'm sure it comes from the 80's
