Anyone happen to know what kinda bike tom cruise rides in the movie Top Gun?

As far as I recall, it was a Honda Interceptor.

It was a Kawasaki 900 Ninja...mid 80's

I stand corrected. After some careful digging, it is indeed an '84 Ninja 900. I can't believe they missed a brilliant marketing opportunity by using an '84 model bike in a film made in '86.

Soooo...they used a 2-year old bike, missing the opportunity to sell the latest-and-greatest offering?

You'll have to remember that while the film may have been released in 1986, it was filmed in 1984-1985. It generally takes anywhere from 6-10 months for postproduction work to be finished before a film is ready to be released to the theatres. Top Gun was released May 16 1986, which means that it was probably filmed in late 1984/early 1985, making the bike relatively up to date for the time.

That's a very good point. I suppose even though bike and car makers release next year's models early, it still wouldn't make up for the time needed for filming.

Here is a pic of a clean example. Not an '84 but close. I think Outback Al had one like this as well....

I had an '84, very pretty in charcoal and red, and was fast, too.
