lost my ignition key :/

If you do get a new one, make a copy and keep it in your house somewhere. Key copies are really cheap and save lots of trouble.

Do you have to go to a dealer to get a copy or can a Walmart key cutter do it?

I've been meaning to get a copy for a bit but I'm rarely off work/near a dealer when they are open so I always forget to look

I had to do the same thing for my 1982 Yamaha maxim 400. The key code for mine was on the opposite side of key hole itself. So directly underneath the ignition. It will start with a letter and have five numbers following.

So something like this D12345

Mine looked like this D12345 205; the last three numbers were useless ignore them if you have them. You don't have to take off the ignition but you will have to move some of the wires around to get a good look at it. They are small but they are there.

I had my copy made at a local hardware store. Cost $2. I think the only time you'd hit a problem would be if your key has one of those "chips" in it like many newer cars do.

i took the switch out and cannot find the numbers anywhere, any ideas?

Take the switch to a locksmith, I am one and can usually make a key. I'm surprissed there is no code number on it. You may try looking on the other locks, seat, helmet or whatever other keyed the same lock you have. Call in advance to the locksmith if you can and see if they offer that kind of service.
Or buy another Ign. switch from a dealer or ebay.
