Speeding tickets on a motorcycle?

I ride with no plates, don't get fines, never been pulled over either. Did get questioned about my lack of plates by two cops at a service station once. Bought them both Cokes, Nothing said.

Well done. I've often talked my way out of speeding tickets, 11 of 12 successful in the last year. The one ticket I got was for going 5 over. I was following a cop, who moved into the passing lane, slammed on his brakes, got behind me and turned the light on. 5 over... what a prick. Cursed at me, made my passenger cry, yelled forever AND STILL GAVE ME A TICKET!

Anyway- Around the DC metro area the speed limit may officially be 35,45,55, or 65 but that translated into minimums of 55,65,75,85- especially around rush hour. In the rain they drop by 10.

Anyway- most garages only charge a few bucks to test it for you... charge more to adjust but if you know it's 5 slow...

I've seen bikes pulled over around here too.

My question is on the radar - why is it no longer the case that radar needs a large surface to bounce off? I thought it would be pretty much impossible to hit a bike with a radar gun if there are large vehicles all around, not to mention the fact that there are few decent surfaces on the front of a bike.

Of course, that doesn't stop them from pacing you with their cars to get a speed...

Aren't most police switching over to the laser guns? From what I understand that system doesn't need nearly as big a target, doesn't give off as much power to give drivers a warning and is more accurate.

You know you don't have to talk to a cop when he pulls you over. Or answer any of his questions like - Why do you think I pulled you over? Do you have anything to hide? ect. You can reply, excuse me officer, how may I help you? or Say are you detaining us officer or are we free to go? (then he usually gives you a ticket unless he has a real reason to detain you if he dosn't it's against the law)

edit it helps if you dispute the ticket too because he can't claim you confessed about what you were doing

In Va rarely try to make you confess. They do however make you sign a document saying something along the lines of I understand the charges above even if I don't agree with them- it's actually part of the ticket if I can recall.

never drive fast near emporia virginia... not even 5 over. My insurance company didn't raise my rates because they said that a ridiculously large number of tickets come from Emporia and that 5 over was ridiculous. USAA at the time

Quick tip for anyone that finds they got a lot of laser tickets. Wax, wax, wax. The extra coats of wax on the bike help to diffract the laser beam meaning not as much of it can bounce back to the actual gun. It's not a guarantee that you won't be getting a ticket, but it does reduce the likelyhoold that you will.

Then again going the speed limit works too.

You can also use scramblers. As they aren't radar detection units they are still a grey area in Virginia Law, not sure about other stats. The cop points his gun at you and gets a reading of 550 mph. A cop friend of mine told me that if he thinks you're going fast he'll pull you over to hassle you and waste your time anyway, but he can't actually give you a ticket.

"Your honor, seeing as the powerplant, aerodynamics and other set features on my bike prevent me from reaching 200 mph, I must contest that the officers gun was seriously miscalibrated"

If you're talking about the devices that send out a signal on the radar's frequency (i.e. jammers), they are illegal. A license from the FCC is required to transmit on those frequencies. Most of the one's I've seen contain illegal transmitters.

Sorry to break it to you guys, but radar guns work just fine on motorcycles, even shiny round ones. I just received my first ticket ever and was on my bike. The officer says that I was going 83 mph in a 55 zone. I'm currently fighting it in court.

The problem with sport bikes is that your speed can easily vary as much as 40 mph within one short curve. Which must be what happened to me. I know that I entered the corner at 55-60, but have no idea how fast I was going when he hit me with his radar gun. My brother was behind me on his bike and we were both ticketed for going the same speed. I find it hard to believe that the officer can prove that both of us were going exactly 83 mph.

Unmarked police cars shouldn't be allowed

... the first thing I did when I got home was wire my radar detector on my bike.
