What type of lubrication system

#1 Unread post by tewillia »

Does a 2000 Yamaha R1 have a wet sump or a dry sump lubrication system?

The only bike that I believe with a dry pan is the Harley and even than I am not really sure of that. I know it has an oil tank.

Wet-sump systems have no oil tank, as was mentioned. Harley's twins are the only modern bikes that spring to mind with this set-up. The R-1, and every other sportbike i can think of, use a wet-sump engine. If you add oil to the engine cases, it's probably a wet-sump. If you add oil to a separate tank, remotely mounted elsewhere on the bike, it's a dry-sump.

Dry Sump

Sump is bottom of engine. If the oil is not in the bottom of the engine, it is a dry sump.
