Hello from a Newbie in Southern Maryland/DC

Hi all,

I thought I would join up and check out the forms to see what information I can gather from y'all. I have never ridden before although its something I've thought about wanting to learn off and on for many years. I own no bike yet - in Feb 2006, I plan to go take the MSF course so I can see what motorcycling is really all about.

I'm sure I will be posting questions (some of them quite dumb for you experienced riders out there) but please bear with me. I look forward to lots of great information in the months ahead.

Thanks for the welcome. I sat at my computer for a while last night reading through lots of posts. This is a great place for getting questions answered without even having to ask.

Something I haven't seen yet though is: When first starting out practice riding, can you do so without a motorcycle license or learner's permit? I am talking about just riding in the neighborhood or at a nearby school - not on major roads or the highway. Thanks.

To legally traverse on any kind of public access street you need at least a learners permit .

Welcome from the DC area. This is a great forum for all your information needs. Half the people here will blow your mind with what they know and the other half are just like us and learning something new everyday.

A big welcome to you as well. Check out the MSF web site and I think you can get most of your qtns aswered there. Also check to see if your state of Maryland has a web site for general qtns or perhaps the state or local police web can get you the latest info on your laws. Most public parking lots worry about liability issues should you crash into someone else. Be safe & be seen.

Thanks everyone for all the welcomes. It really helps ease the mind when getting into something new. Maybe this is what I've heard people mention as getting hit by the infamous "bug." I've always thought riding would be fun ever since I went for a ride with a cousin when I was little. I'm about to finish a graduate degree in computer security and thought I deserved to treat myself to something fun and exciting. I have been all over this web site and forums as well as several others including the MSF site. I have plans to go and sign up for the MSF course on Feb 1 at 9am sharp. I have been downloading and reading what information I can from the web. I am really getting excited to go take the course although I must admit I am nervous that I won't do well in the class simply because of my lack of experience with a bike. Hope to post more in the near future.
