Would you buy it

#1 Unread post by storysunfolding »

I'm considering buying this bike but an unsure if it has too many miles (soon ot have major problems).

It's a 1985 Honda Magna V30 to replace my 82 Yamaha XZ 550 as my daily rider. The thing that worries me is that the mileage is at 40k. There are a few things wrong cosmetically but those don't worry me as much. Anyway the price is $200. It has new tires and other than 6 weird spots where they covered rust with grey primer and a small tear in the seat is in excellent condition.

I just don't want to buy it if the first thing I'm going to need is a new engine.

40k isn't much for a bike of that age. I'd be a little worried that the seals had dried out or something, because it sounds like it's be sitting for a while.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

Those bikes CAN get 75k no problem if maintained well. That said... if you can get a running or soon to run with a little work kind of bike for $200 bucks you are way ahead of the game. Think about it... you could easily pay that much for tires or a seat or gauges or a tank or.... if it actually even runs that's a steal.

You really don't have much to lose considering the price tag. Just don't let it become a money pit there's a lot of people out there that wind up pumping lots of coin into their bikes when they're just beaters. After a year or two, they realize they could have saved that money spent on fixing things they've already fixed and put down a sizeable down payment on the bike they really want.

My buddy did that. Don't wind up like him.

For $200, you really can't go wrong. I'm sure that if it came down to it, you could sell that much worth of parts off of it on ebay or something.

So I guess I'm saying I'd buy it. Those are good bikes too. Rode for a bit with a guy who had one this summer. I was really surprised at the pickup that bike had. Definitely not blazing, but pretty decent I thought.

The only way you can go wrong with a $200 motorcyle is if you try to make it "mint". This is a disease that I suffer from and it is cheaper everytime to just buy one in mint condition. If you are just going to ride it, and it is rideable, go for it!
