yeah, if you are behind someone and turn on your brights, that is normally so they will get out of the way. But if the person is beside you, that normally give the "go-ahead" for them to pass you.

Like someone else said it really just blinds the person in front of you if you flash your brights so if its possible (i.e. you dont have constant running lights) i think its best to flip your lights off and back on real fast. i know this is impossible in most newer cars, but its the only way i flash in my truck. My bike....always has a light on so its just two really fast flashes of the brights. they see the first out of the corner of their eye and look up in time to catch the second and you know that they see you now, so then you can pass.

Oh I remembered a guy on pretty bang-up/old car, he drove on most left lane at lower than or around speed limit at night (later than mid night). I was behind him flashed him a few time until he moved to the lane next to exit and flash me back with his kind of 1 million candle power flashlight. I hate when slow cars drive at around same speed and spread all over the lane on FWY.

VermilionX wrote: this one im sure... here in CA you make a hand signal like saying "c'mon" and that means you want them to go ahead.

i do this even on the bike, especially on 4-way stops when i reach the stop sign almost the same time as anotehr vehicle.
I meant mainly at night when you can't see the guy, but we also have alot of illegally tinted windows
