The way I look at it, and this is just my view, and I'm goin to use the awful metaphore of a castle here just because it's simple, is this:

Your body is for all intents an purposes a castle, a prison, an army base, the anology is irrelevant. However, you have this set of defenses, skin, whiteblood cells, antibodies, kidneys etc etc etc etc to death.

Now you have these little invaders, bacteria, viri, disease, death and pestilence. When your body is in good working condition (you're eating well, getting exercise, well rested) you are best equipped to stave off these invaders.

However, when you start to remove beneficial... things, to your body. Shitty food, no sleep etc, your defenses start to fail, more invaders get through and you get sick.

Now what actually causes the disease? Was it not eating well and letting IN the virus (allowing it a foothold)? Or was it the virus's fault for actually causing the problems? All I see is a chicken and an egg.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

Hiya Sev :D

Well, I pretty much agree with you there. This issue of causality is a tricky one. As David Hume pointed out, we have to take causality on trust. You can't actually demonstrate that such a principle exists. All you can observe is one damn thing following another. The connection between 'cause' and 'effect' (event A and event B) is assumed in western culture, but it cannot be observed.

But accepting that, in the Western way of thinking a cause will always pre-date an effect whcih is linked to it. Take the instance of an 'invading' bacterium. If you want to claim that the bacterium causes the disease you have to demnstrate that the bacterium is invariably present before degeneration of tissue takes place (i.e. predates it). Medical research has not been able to do that in any convincing way. You also have to show that the degeneration of the tissue is 'caused' by the presence of the bacterium - that it is not just a concurrent event. And since we cannot observe causes directly we have to have evidence of an all but invariable pattern of event a following event b. Again, research has been unable to show that.

That leaves open a number of possibilities.

But, as I see it, the issue of causality is important for cultural reasons as well. In the West we happen to think rigidly in terms of cause and effect, so what we regard as a cause will determine the way we act. If you think germs are the cause of disease then you will spend all your time an energy attempting to eradicate them (a pointless exercise in my view - but that's another argument). If you think poor diet and poor nutrition is the 'cause' that is where you will focus.

Here's a test you could try...

Go sit in a glass sealed clean room and eat wheat germ and tofu and oranges and brussels sprouts and broccoli and ecchinacea and water for 90 days - don't forget to exercise. Get a full checkup. You should be perfectly healthy.

now

Cut the end of your finger with a scalpel and someone with a mask and a tyvek suit can come in and rub a slide containing live ebola virus on the cut on your finger. Seven days later there is a greater than 80% chance you will believe in the germ theory. Of course your organs will be almost completely liquified, but you'll believe for a moment or two before that happens.

I think he was referring just to bacterial germs. We can watch a virus attacking cells and producing unhealthy ones.

I dunno...but I suspect this anti-germ theory is born from one of the many unreputable websites.

Meanwhile, don't forget to wash your hands :)

Got it - bacteria. You're right though - washing your hands frequently will take care of bacteria and viruses.

It's more of a split, like intellegence or growth in a child. You have a predetermined boundary. I'm going to run with height on this one.

Lets say a child was just born, based on the genetic information passed on by his parents he could grow up to be anywhere between 5'0" and 6'0" (because I like round numbers). What determines his final height is a combination of nuitrition, damage (physical damage), and environment. He could fall anywhere between the two hieghts, if he has great food, doesn't get hurt, and lives in a suitable environment he will be tall. If he has shitty food, gets hurt a lot and it's a bad place for a human to live he'll be short.

I think that health works the same way. By keeping yourself healthy you reduce the likelyhood that germs/bacteria/viruses will take root in your system. You do not prevent them. By keeping yourself in poor health you make it easier for the bad stuff to get a foothold.

There is no perfect cure.

I agree with Sev. Nothing's fool-proof, but environment, diet, and physical activity have a lot to do with whether or not you'll be joining your coworkers in getting the flu this year. If your body's immune system is run down from malnutrition and a 24/7 struggle to fight off toxins introduced into your body via processed foods, then when the flu virus comes along your body won't stand a chance. If your body's pH is alkaline (healthy) as opposed to acidic, sickness and disease simply cannot gain a foothold.

Well, you're sort of right Zootech, you can still get sick if you're careful with yourself, but it's just less likely.

Granted. I wasn't speaking in absolutes. With all the stresses, toxins, and whatnot we're faced with every day it's virtually impossible to reach a perfect alkaline state. But statistically speaking (qualifiying statement), you won't be getting sick with every little cough and cold that blows through the workplace of your immune system is properly maintained through proper diet.

And also being exposed to some degree of germs is good. It makes your body trained to defend.
