To give you an idea I needed an entire wiring loom for my CeeGee, specially order item arrived in 4 days cost £90.00

I wouldn't go back to that mechanic.

Actually, the laws vary by state (in the U.S.). Some states require that only 1 party to the conversation be aware of the recording. Other states require that both parties are aware.

It would be a good idea to find out before admitting to a court that you may have broken the law.

Well I don't agree with that part of it. There is always publicity that will sometimes make a shop change their mind. I would ask for some of that money back, if they are unwilling, go to your local BBB and lodge a complaint. Also if there is a small local paper that might be willing to do a story on the ins and outs of motorcycle repair???

Hard lesson to learn - agree on a price before work starts with an order to call before doing anything if the amount will be exceeded. I don't see a way to recover any of this money.

It wouldn't be breaking the law to record them, it would only be if you recorded it incorrectly and then used it to back up libel/slander because it couldn't be used in court.

In Va you either have to tell them or there has to be a beeping every 10 seconds. I'm pretty sure the second one is so the person says "What's that beeping" and if you didn't tell him- well then it's inadmissable.

Of course when your recording for blackmail... maybe that's different.
