So i have a 99 R1, replaced the battery for the summer since the weather was warming, but after starting the bike a couple of times after riding here and there and stopping for gas or at a friends house the battery goes dead. I charged the battery up stuck it in the bike revved the bike to 5K and my voltmeter read 13.89. Then once again after riding and starting and stopping a couple of times it was dead again. What is going on? Is it my battery? or my stator? or my voltage regulator? or any thing i'm leaving out? Thanks for the help, I'm just ready to get riding.

Start the bike and test the battery voltage at idle with a volt meter. Good is anything above 13.2 volts at idle. Less problably means charging issues. At high idle 2 to 3 k rpm you should see at least 13.2 and maybe even up to the 13.8-14.2 range. In alternator output tenths of a volt count a lot. FYI : a well charged good condition 12 volt battery should show 12.6 volts under static non operational conditions.

From a similar problem with an R6:
bubba_zenetti wrote:put a volt meter on the battery. check the reading, it should be 12 volts or 12.xx. start teh bike and rev it slowly to 5k. it should climb to a reading of no more than 14.2 volts and drop to 12.xx when you let go of the gas. if not you have a charging system problem. in my experience, it is the stator when it comes to the early r6. they will short out if you look at them funny. you dont have to drop it on the stator side for one to go. last year i must have repalced at least 10 r6 stators. they are all prone to problems.
