if you are wanting a cruiser check out the honda rebel 250, its performance is on a par with the average car and it will do highway speed.
a 500 is faster than most cars but forgiving enough for most new riders, this is the most commonly recommended choice for a new rider.
the Kawasaki vulcan 500 would be a good choice for a first cruiser.
a 250 will likely be cheaper to insure.
look for a used bike and dont finance it. an older bike will be cheaper to insure especially if you only have to carry liability on it.
my 500 costs me $84 a year to insure and im 27 with no tickets and one accident.
