newbie - can't find neutral

#1 Unread post by calvarycoffee »

hey,

just purchased a '82 yamaha seca 650.

started riding, and i am having trouble finding neutral. it is most difficult when the bike is off and it won't start until it is in neutral.

coasting to a stop, i can get it, but it is difficult while the engine's off or the bike's not moving.

the shift pattern is 1 down- 3 ( or 4?) up. and so i can shift to 1st or 2nd but not neutral?

there is probably a stupid/easy solution. i just dont have the patience to fiddle with it.

thanks
dave

N is 1/2 way between 1st and 2nd.... take it all the way down to 1st, then lightly tug up.

There may be a bent linkage somewhere preventing you from finding neutral, but I think it's more likely it is driver error then mechanical fault.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

With you right foot down push forward slightly as you shift up from first to neutral. The small amount of movement can help with tricky transmissions.

yeah its tuff to find on mine sometimes still...alot of times it will just pass right through it. sometimes if you just tap down a couple of times will pop into neutral. if not just tap it up slightly.
thats a sweet bike.

Yes both of my Hondas will occasinally get into a funk where they seem to want to skip over neutral repeatedly, 1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2- N finally.

The above mentioned trick of moving the bike slightly if it's off usually helps. If it's running, letting the clutch out, to creep the bike an inch or so, seems to work best. Will it start in gear if you hold the clutch in? Mine do.

yeah, i hold in the clutch and nothing, unless its in neutral.

i have been holding down the start switch while fiddling with the shift pedal. that's been how i start it.

I have a hard time finding neutral on mine as well. What I found helps (when the bike is off) is to pop it down to first, then up to second and lightly down to neutral. Hope this helps
