New digs needed

#1 Unread post by BuzZz »

I was going to post a rant here..... whine and moan a bit, but I just read SV-Wolf's blog and it kinda put my problems into perspective.

But I'm still gonna try..... just cause I want to snivel right now.

Had a job interview the other day. It went well. Too well to ignore. So I'm seriously considering(as in I just gave notice today) quiting a good job I've had for 15 years and moving.

This move will be 250 KM from here, and on a personal note... I hate change. At least radical change like this. So I've been pretty stressed. Before I decided anything, I thought it all through, and made a plan of attack and had it pretty well sussed. Housing is in ridiculously short supply in the area(everywhere around here with the patch booming like it is) but I had a good line on a place in Red Deer.

Well that fell through today.

So now I have to find another place 2 1/2 hrs from away, while working out my notice here...... :frusty:

My stress level had dropped significantly for about 2 hours today, right between telling my boss bye and getting the call that the house was gone. Now it's spiked back up again...... :frusty: :frusty: :frusty:

Now I'm gonna be a wreck unless/until I get another place lined up.

I HATE moving.

But it sure will be nice when it's all done. I just wish it was already done.....

I need a drink.... or something similar
No Witnesses.... :shifty:

Are you going to be working in Red Deer then Dean? If so, it'll be great to have you around here. I'll keep an eye posted for any houses in Sylvan Lake if you want. It's only a 10 minute ride/drive west of Red Deer, and not too bad of a place to live. Lots of new housing construction around here too, without quite the land crunch that RD has.

I have to say it but you most likely will have to buy the first place that comes along that will work, move, then look for what you really want. I know a few people who have moved in to the Sherwood-Park and Red-Deer areas lately and that is exactly what they had to do. It's a shame if there is a realtor involved as giving those leaches any of your hard earned money is just a waste.
On the subject of change: It's the best thing that can happen to a person if their mind can get around it. I have worked at a place for a long time that completely changed their way of doing buisness a couple of years ago. I believed what we were doing was right BEFORE THE CHANGE and I was against anything that would take me outta my little comfort zone. Boy I needed that kick in the pants. It made me look at everything differently and I will not let myself get caught in that rut again. Red-Deer is a great town.....and closer to the TMW head office...which in itself is now a little closer to Red-Deer (as of Friday).

Whoah whoah whoah, you're looking at this the wrong way! The WAY wrong way.

Here's what we're going to do. You're going to take a weekend off, and the two (or three if your wife wants to come). Are going to ride down to Red Deer and meet up with Gadjet who is going to show us the homes he's seen on the market.

Then we get rowdy drunk, you make an offer on one, we pass out, and ride back in the morning.

Stress? PSHAW!
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

Changing jobs is the least worrying part of the whole deal. I am looking forward to that end of it, it's gonna be alot easier on me than where I am now. They have been changing the company and how they operate for years now, bit by bit. But the last year or so they have really been going to town and it's a completely different entity now. And they have been piling more and more corporate garbage on my plate, in addition to the actual 'make this thing run' part of the job. Which is one thing, but I contract to the oil company, so now I'm doing my job, the paperwork for my employer and maintaining a service truck... plus... lot more paperwork, job scope planning, supervising jobs, comities, asskissing for the corporation.... all without a cent more for me. In fact I am losing an extra 5-6 hours of my day, everyday, to get all this extra stuff done. And subject to all the internal politics and 'look at how good I am'-to-the-boss pandering that large companies have, but without any control or say in them. Too many idiots(cause most of the guys there are complete morons) with access and authority to my azz, and no power to cover said azz. I like the work, but hate the job. And the job is becoming a monster I have no control over, and the good work hasn't changed, I just have less time to get it done in addition to all the rest of the garbage on my plate now....... gggrrr, I get pizzed just thinking about it....

And I'm tired of living with 2 paved roads in or out of town...... the whole place is layed out in a grid for hundreds of miles, there's nothing for the roads to go around, so they are straight and flat and they may be great for driving the hell away from here on, but they suck for riding. And Red Deer is a nice little city in a nice little area, but with all the handy things that go along with a city. Like more than 1 store and the variety that goes with it, 24 hr gas stations, entertainment, things like that. And almost 3 hrs closer to the mountains.... Sign me up, Baby!

The new job is actually in Stettler, but there is nothing available there for housing, unless you got $500,000+ to spend. So I'll commute, giving the exact location I live a little room for play. And I'll be able to ride to work for the first time in 20 years! Too cool... 8)

Right now, I just want to rent a place, and find a 'real' house later. So that don't make finding a place any easier, but it has to be right now. I just got my financial chit back to even after my divorce, and changing jobs means no mortgage for me for a year or 2. Luckily, my wife is pretty good at hunting up residences, cause I'm not. And any help from Owen or the rest of you finding a place would not be un-appreciated.

Sylvan is certainly within the realm of possibility, but the farther east, the better, just to cut down driving time to work. But we are flexible.

I am looking forward to this, after it's all done, the job will be enjoyable and the money will be the about same to start, then better and better, so I'm really looking forward to that part. And working Mon-Fri will be weird, but I think I remember how to do it. No more 10 or 25 day shifts.... off work at 4:30 or else making overtime... and getting paid for that overtime....benifits.... just like a real person..... yeehaw!

And it's a much nicer area to live than this friggin' desert, with better access to the rest of the world. Owen is close by, so I'll have a buddy to ride with once-n-while, I can make the odd TMW Pub night, much nicer parks and lakes close-by..... did I mention the mountains??? It's gonna be nice......

Just a normal day in the no holds barred, full throttle, thrill a minute, laugh in the face of death world of a Millwright, I'd say.

Best of luck with the new job and change of scenery, I hope it all works out for you.

Yep, the job is what it is, but this should be much better overall. And no more working in un-heated shacks all winter, no Goddamm, Muther****ing, phone!, :kicking: no more solving everyone else's problems for them (no I don't want to drive an hour to come fix your F***in stapler, you idiot! I got real work to do)

Thanx everybody. It's good to vent once in awhile.

Dean, there are a couple of houses up for sale on the East side of Sylvan Lake right now, with new ones being built all the time. There are also two new apartment buildings that are not completed yet, but they are taking reservations for rentals. I'll grab the number for you if you want. Rental accomodations in RD will be picking up in a couple weeks as the college students all bugger off.

You might also want to check Blackfalds and Joffre.

Blackfalds is about 10 minutes north of RD and has a highway that leads to Stettler on the south side of the town. Joffre is east of Blackfalds.

Dude... I don't envy you. I hate moving. Changing jobs is always a good thing... but moving sucks.

I may be changing locals in the next year... which means packing up the wife, kid and a couple tons of cra-p (stupid swear filter!) and moving. I hate moving.

Good luck and congrats on the new job...

We're the first ones to die
