I would think reverse shifting would be more of a natural thought. Obviously if you are use to 1 down 5up, it wouldn't be natural. It is one of those why didn't they do that from the start things. It would seem easier to just push down on it for 2nd gear and higher, and make shifting faster by a tiny bit.

The reverse pattern actually seems like it would be more natural. It's easier to push down then it is to lift up, so you can go up through the gears faster.

Pull up to go up...

Push down to go down...

That makes sense to me.

people say it doesn't really make you fast. just pick one pattern and stick w/ it.

im trying it out since it's so simple to do on my bike. just adjust one bolt and TADA! reverse shift. my mechanic did it in like 2 mins.

some bikes need a kit before they can change to reverse pattern.

anyway... people that like it say that pressing down to shift up feels more natural and that's mostly the reason why they like it.

and like i said, it's growing on me and liking it better as i ride more w/ it.

I bet you'll confuse the hell out of yourself if you ever borrow a buddy's bike that has a normal shift pattern.

confused? i don't think so.

but i do know that i will be riding more conservatively since i need a few milliseconds to remind myself that im using a normal shifting pattern.

kinda like what im experiencing right now. i don't get confused but it's not yet instinctive.

besides, i don't like borrowing vehicles except if i really need it.

The idea behind the push down - shift down is that if you have to suddenly stop you can just stomp your foot a few times and you'll eventually end up in 1st gear. Much more natural than trying to pull your toe up.

when im hard braking, i just brake and downshift only when im considerably slow enough.

brakes work better when you're in gear so i don't use the clutch when hard braking until i slow down to almost a stop.
