the primary thing motorcycle boots provide in a crash is ankle support and abrasion/burn resistance.

even if you never crash a good pair of motorcycle boots is nice to have. They are much more comfortable for riding than work boots. I have a pair of steel toed work boots that I use for work but the only time I ride in them is when commuting to/from work. I have a pair of Set Up Gran Prix street boots that I normally wear when riding, they are way more comfortable on the bike than work boots.

these are what I usually wear on my feet when riding. They are pretty unobtrusive with your pant legs over them. They are comfortable enough that I can walk around in them with no problems. Never crash tested them, hope to never have to.

Why do boots seem to be the only item of safety gear that needs to be dual purpose, ie strong and comfortable to walk around in? People would be rather uncomfortable wearing a helmet around all day but that does not mean they should choose a baseball cap to ride in instead.
Buy something designed for motorcyclists, because if you come off it can mean the world of difference, believe me, I know...

I wouldn't wear mine to just walk around in, but it is a matter of convenience.

Convenience... Real easy to take that thing off your head once you get where you're going.

My criteria for boots is.

Easy enough to put on and take off that I'll do it.

The gear that'll protect you best is the gear that you will wear. Every time.

If it's too much of a PITA to don and you skip it, it won't do you any good.

My boots are not the best, but they don't look like a mugged a power ranger to get em, and they fasten with velcro so they go on and off easy and so I wear them.
Familiarity breeds contempt.

It would be rather inconvenient to put on a prosthetic foot every day too.

It would be just as easy to take the boots off as well.

My boots take as long to put on as a pair of sneakers.
I wear my boots every time, same as helmet, jacket etc.
My boots are no more a PITA than anything else I put on to ride.
My boots look like I mugged a power ranger but I am wearing a helmet for gods sake! That looks a little odd too.
My boots use no velcro, just a zipper and a ratchet system and are as easy to put on as my previous pair that used velcro but the difference is that these will last a lot longer.

You can justify it however you want, but if you think your hands or arms are more important than your legs and feet just say so.
