the Rebel is so *cool* that other archaic bikes are taking over the Rebel thread
I'd say it sells well because it meets a need very well, like Honda's lawnmowers, which are equally uncool. just pull and go.
The Sportster's longevity probably is much like this too... it's simple, meets a need, shows how loyal Harley owners are... that cruisers are all about styling, and motorcycling has a lot of people stuck in the past -- that is heritage with h-d. Any evolution of the sportster is the equivalent of leaving a rock in a river long enough that erosion makes chanhe inevitable... it would be impossible not too have upgraded the Sportster given the technological advancements that have flown past them year after year... and slowwww change is at the heart of the cruiser market.... harley's customers and the aftermarket have probably guided the way of that bike more than h-d themselves at times. just an oddity in the bike world, and probably appreciated as much for that as anything else.
