Lost VIN Number- Where do we find it?

Hi everybody.

I am in the great spot of buying the same model and make of motorcycle I first learned on. A 1982 Yamaha Maxim 550. The trick I have run into is that part of the sticker VIN Number (redundant, I know) has been torn. The middle part. I know that the VIN matches the VIN somewhere on the engine. So here is the big question:

WHERE CAN I FIND THE ENGINE #?
WHERE CAN I FIND THE VIN?

Is it possible to fill in the middle if we have the beginning and ending numbers?

Should be stamped on the frame, usually on the neck.

It should be stamped or engraved on the frame itself either near the neck, down tubes or engine casing. If not then take off the seat and look in the battery area.

The engine # should be on the engine itself, probably near the oil filler area.

With my bike it was under the VIN sticker on the neck, kinda redundant I guess.

Some are located on bottom tube of frame, under engine.

Thanks for all the help. Between the different variations, my friend and I were able to find the vin and use it for a title transfer. I am now VERY VERY proudly commuting back and forth from work everyday. Now I am having fun discovering the quirks of a 25 year old machine. It still runs like a champ, but has it's issues.
