Fitst bike, 1985 yamaha Maxim 700, GOOD OR BAD IDEA?

#1 Unread post by NewbieBiker21 »

i am going down to look at a 1985 yamaha maxim 700 this week, i could get it for 800 bucks which is why i am looking at it. I rode dirt bikes as a kid, but this would be my first street bike, does anyone think it is to much power for a ' rookie ' like me to have on the street? Also, i am a little guy, ( only 5 foot 8 inches, 150 pounds ) so would the weight of the bike ( close to 500lbs ) be to much for me to start with? what do you guys think? let me know

If the bike runs well, it is a great bike to do your road test on. I did mine on a '85 Maxim. I did some practicing on the bike for a while, and it was a nice bike. I thought the weight was closer to 560 though. You can do a seach to find the specs online.

That depends on how well balanced the bike is. If it has a low center of gravity, it will feel lighter. From what I can recall about maxims, they tend to have a higher center of gravity which makes them top heavy. This will make balancing the bike at a stop more difficult as even a slight lean will shift alot of that weight to one side.

Don't buy the maxim. Let me get it instead. It is a great bike. I had a 650 81 maxim back in 83. It is a quick fast bike. Also very reliable. Be careful on it, because it loves to run fast.
