I went down :(

#1 Unread post by Flipper »

Yesterday I locked up my front tire and went down. I was following a van and suddenly It seemed I was right on top of him.
I emergency braked at about 25mph and the front wheel locked up. Before I knew it I was on the street, pinned under my bike.

I have been riding my 599 for one year now.
I have 3500 miles, almost all city commute miles. I always keep a good distance.
I just don't know how it happened. I'm not sure if he had brake lights or not. It happened so fast.

I had to do the whole paramedic ER thing

I have a separated right shoulder and some bruises on my ankle, knees and hip. My whole body seems to hurt.
I was wearing all my gear including my Joe Rocket over pants which I think really saved me a broken knee cap.
All my gear really helped.ATGATT. My helmet never hit the ground.

My bike has a broken rear brake lever and snapped off foot peg. Aso scratched up exaust, engine and cowl.

Licking my wounds and feeling sad.

sounds like to me you were not concentrating enough.

If your behind an object as large as a van then you need more distance between you and them as you cant see past them as you can with cars.

Also it sounds like you overreacted and grabbed way to much front if you locked it up.

Brake lights or no brake lights my friend, its up to you to protect yourself out there not the other cars to be mindful of your life.

Glad your ok, hope your recovery is quick

I totally agree that it was my fault. That's why I'm so mad at myself.

I've had to emergency stop at even higher speeds and always squeezed down to a nice controlled stop. I practice that a lot and felt pretty confident in my skill.

Was I distracted? Did I misjudge the speed? I wish I could replay it in my head to analyze it, but it happened so fast and is just a blur.
What I remember most was that it was really loud.
Even when I was laying on the ground it was as if I wasn't really there.
Kind of like I was detached from myself.

My confidence is really shaken.

Thanks for the well wishes all.

Wrider, you made me laugh, thanks for that.

I hope your shoulder quickly heals!

Perhaps taking a riding course as a refresher would help you regain confidence.

Sorry about your accident man.
I'm glad it wasn't worse.

It does sound like you weren't paying enough attention to the van in front of you.
That combined with poor following distance seems to have bit you in the back-side.

Don't worry too much.
Most all of us have probably let our mind wander a time or two while on our motorcycles so you don't deserve to beat yourself up too much about the accident.

An accident will ALWAYS set your confidence back a little no matter how much experience you have.
So long as you think you can still enjoy riding, you will be fine.
Get back on that scoot as soon as you can.

Peace.

Heal up fast!

Since quick stops and swerving are some of the best tools in my riding arsenal, I practice them every time I ride. My street has a big straight away before my house. I wait until there are no cars behind me (practically every time), get up to a set speed and as soon as I pass a particular boat on the street, come to a stop as quickly as possible. My neighbors keep joking that I don't remember where I live.

I find it keeps me in good practice since I do it so often at varying speeds.

There's also a particular pothole that I like to swerve around, but the DC area gives me plenty throughout my rides anyway
