Downshifting

I just bought a 2008 Vulcan 900, to replace my 99-V-star 650. Now, I never had this issue on the v-star but with the vulcan I have to be really carefull when downshifting. The new bike is very fast, comparatively. I find it intimidating, especially on the highway, to downshift from say 5th to 4th, because the engine seems to have a mind of its own and its hard to match the rpms properly. I never had this issue with the v-star. It seemed to flow alot easier between gears. With the vulcan however, there seems to be alot more finesse involved.

Now, I know this is just a mater of getting used to the bike. And I have had some success with bliping the throttle a bit and feeling out the rpms (no tach). I'm just wonderring if there are any words of wisdom on the matter.

Can you get a tach? I'd rather have a tach than a speedometer.

I have no idea why some bikes dont have them. I should look into getting one. Additional expenses at the moment are not attractive though.

Your bike is new and very tight.......plus you need to get use to it.

I was the same way when I sold my Nighthawk and bought a 2008 C50T...

I experienced the exact same thing..

Now, I have 350 miles on the bike and it's much, much better!!!.....

Bigger motors are fun aren't they? You'll get used to matching the engine speed by sound but when you downshift try to ease the clutch out slower. That'll keep it nice and smooth while your learning about your bike.

Oh, and adding a tach isn't that hard though and I love having one.
